Basics of Putting
You know what they say 'drive for show and putt for dough!!💸💸'
Putting is a vital aspect of the game and usually will make up around half the shots during your round, so really can be make or break.
-Get Confident
Find a putter you find comfortable including size of the head and grip and the length.
-Putting Stance
Your feet should be shoulder width apart.
The ball should be slightly in front of middle
Flex the knees slightly to feel stable and your hips should be square facing the target (the direction you want to start your putt)
-The Putting Grip
The putting grip is a very personal aspect of skill as there is no specific technique will guarantee better results.
However, here two methods that you can try : Traditional Grip: Hold the putter with your palms facing each other. The thumbs should point down the shaft. Your hands should be light, with minimal tension. Cross-Handed Grip (Left-Hand Low for right-handed golfers): Place your left hand lower on the grip than your right (for right-handed players). Try both and see what works best for you.
-The Fundamentals
The backswing should be in the shape of a slight pendulum.
Only use your shoulders to rock the putter back and forth avoiding wrist movement.
The same length follow through as backswing with smooth tempo.
Keep your eyes on the ball throughout the full stroke to avoid poor connection.
-Reading The Greens
Observe the green from different angles. A downhill putt will be faster, while an uphill putt will be slower. If the green slopes from left to right, the ball will break (curve) in that direction.
Crouch down behind the ball and hole to get a better view of what speed and direction the ball will move.
Sometimes golfers like to draw a line on the ball to line up to their target to enable visualisation but I like to stand over the putt and trust the 'feel' of what direction the putt will break.
